Smith Mountain Lake Comes Together to Fight Poverty

Lake Christian Ministries (LCM), an SML non-profit organization that focuses on eradicating poverty in our community, will be holding the 2019 SML Walk to End Poverty on Saturday, September 14th at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. The annual fundraiser challenges members of the SML community to come together to raise money for emergency financial aid, food, clothing, and counseling programs for needy families in Bedford, Franklin, and Pittsylvania counties.

In 2018, close to 2,000 individuals received food provided by LCM in the form of 172,372 delivered meals for 740 households. Over $90,000 in emergency aid was distributed to prevent evictions and loss of utilities.

All proceeds from the walk remain in the Smith Mountain Lake area. The SML Walk to End Poverty is open to walkers, runners, individuals, and teams. Registration is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 18. Lunch will follow.
