Smith Mountain Lake – 21st Annual Antique & Classic Boat Show

Calling all antique and classic boat enthusiasts (and all who are looking for a good time and a little nautical throw-back)! Please come and join the fun at the 21st Annual Antique & Classic Boat Show on September 16th and 17th in Smith Mountain Lake!

This is a remarkable annual event that, for obvious reasons, draws plenty of locals, but also those from surrounding states. The boats are all a part of history, with each of these boats carrying its own tale—like pieces to a puzzle, none of them exactly alike. Where and how did the boat originate? How did that person become the current owner? What amazing incidents did they or a former owner get the privilege of experiencing with it? A thrilling part of the event for the owners of these classics is to excitedly share their boats’ escapades and listen to other boat owners, wide-eyed and with as much enthusiasm, share theirs as well.

The event will be held at the Mariner’s Landing Conference Center in Huddleston, VA. It is a family-friendly event that offers tasty food, vendors, activities and even some entertainment. Come on Friday 9-16, and take advantage of the buffet lunch at The Pointe. After that, enjoy the guided water cruise on the lake. It is sure to please with the breath-taking scenery, not to mention all the stunning homes, islands, and even the hydroelectric dam. Don’t forget the evening social for a spectacular ending to your day.

On Saturday 9-17, it’s SHOW TIME! Showcase your own boat or enjoy all the boats that are being shown. You won’t want to miss out on the activities—even the kids—crafts and entertainment. Souvenirs will be available to commemorate the fabulous time you’ll be enjoying. A delicious banquet dinner will be served in the ballroom at the Mariner’s Landing Conference Center. There will even be awards following the dinner. For more information or registration forms, please visit the website.

Be a part of all the excitement and seafaring tales! Maybe you have your own to tell on yet another fantastic weekend event. You can see why so many people are drawn to become residents of Smith Mountain Lake. For assistance in buying lakefront property, call me, Vicki Millehan. I will be more than happy to give you some housing suggestions. I have over 19 years of experience in selling waterfront homes, and am a long-time resident of Smith Mountain Lake. Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour – Mark Your Calendars!

The Smith Mountain Lake 2011 Charity Home Tour, as well as the Fall Festival, will be held October 7-9 this year. You will not want to miss out on touring the 8 unbelievable homes on the tour, plus enjoy the other activities included in the Fall Festival.

The homes that are being open to those taking the tour are indescribably magnificent. Between the interesting architectural aspects of the physical structures themselves and the unique and creative interior designs, there is hardly room to consider the exclusive antiques and collectables that will be on display. Don’t forget about the distinctive, meticulous landscaping, not to mention the breathtaking view from each wonder you will visit on this tour. This year, there is a new feature to appreciate—live entertainment in some of the homes. Imagine being able to enjoy a string quartet or a pianist while touring.

This is definitely an event worth attending! You can take the tour by land (car) or water (boat). Either form of transportation may be privately owned or rented. This event will be held rain or shine, but the homes are not handicap accessible. Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance and $25 if purchased the weekend of the event.

The Home Tour has already acquired over $80,000 in both business and individual sponsorships. The 8 charities benefiting from this event have done their fair share in trying to generate these sponsorships and continue to work hard to create more interest.

Held at the same time this year,The Fall Festival will show off the area as well as the homes on the tour. There will be tours of Bridgewater Plaza, Downtown Moneta, The Forum, Lake Plaza, The General Store and P.W. Morgan Farms, plus big discounts on boat rentals, a weekend package at the Mariners Landing, half-price workout passes at the YMCA, and plenty of discounts at local restaurants for tour ticket holders. By the time the weekend occurs, event planners anticipate that there will be even more discounts available.

On Friday and Saturday, the tour times are 10am – 5pm. On Sunday, it will be 1pm – 5pm. And tickets are valid all three days, one visit per person per home. That leaves some flexibility for enjoying both the Home Tour and the Fall Festival. So mark your calendars and make a weekend of it! For more information on touring or making a donation, please visit the SML 2011 Charity Home Tour website.

The weekend should be fun for locals, visitors, and especially those who are considering a move to Smith Mountain Lake. As you can tell just from the extraordinary events planned for October alone, SML is an amazing place for a permanent residence. For assistance in buying lakefront property, call me, Vicki Millehan. I will be more than happy to give you some housing suggestions. I have over 19 years of experience in selling waterfront homes, and am a long-time resident of Smith Mountain Lake. Smith Mountain Striper Club Shares the Joy of Fishing with Children from Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital

The Smith Mountain Striper Club brought smiles to the faces of children who are patients at the Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital. What put a smile on the faces of these children? Fishing! The Smith Mountain Striper Club

Volunteers from the Smith Mountain Striper Club taught the children the joy of fishing. For many of the children, it was the first time they had ever fished. They had so much fun experiencing the joy of catching that first fish.

By sharing a sport that they love, the Smith Mountain Striper Club provided these children with an experience that let them forget about their illness, for a brief period, and enjoy the pleasures of the great outdoors.

Fishing was a big part of the three-day event, organized by Carilion that was held at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center, but the children and their parents participated in many fun activities.

The staff of 4-H and Carilion nurses supervised the children as they canoed, swam, built campfires and practiced archery.

A wonderful thing about this event is that Carilion also provided the parents with fun and relaxing activities. So, for a brief period, they could focus on something other than their child’s illness. The parents were treated to long, relaxing massages. They also attended cooking, exercise and team-building classes.

The Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital is fortunate to be a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. As a Miracle Network Hospital, no child is turned away regardless of their parents’ ability to pay. In order to continue to provide excellent medical service and run events for children, fund raising is a big part of the hospital’s success. All funds raised locally, remain local.

A fund raiser scheduled for August 15-17 is the Anthem Lemon Aid Stand. Your children can set up a lemon aid stand, or they can sell via the Internet. This will not only be fun for your children, but will provide a valuable lesson in the sense of accomplishment that is achieved by helping others. Children helping children!

One of the easiest ways to support our local Roanoke Children’s Miracle Network Hospital is to purchase their Miracle Balloons. The Carilion Event webpage has a list of stores where the balloons may be purchased as well as many exciting upcoming fund raiser events.

I love helping out my community and keeping them informed on local events. I am also passionate about assisting those who want to buy lakefront property, so call me, Vicki Millehan. I have over 19 years of experience in selling waterfront homes, and am a long-time resident of Smith Mountain Lake.
